The Palace of Culture and Science (Polish: Pałac Kultury i Nauki, also abbreviated PKiN) in Warsaw is the tallest building in Poland, the eighth tallest building in the European Union. The building was originally known as the Joseph Stalin Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki imienia Józefa Stalina), but in the wake of destalinzation the dedication to Stalin was revoked; Stalin’s name was removed from the interior lobby and one of the building’s sculptures. Currently it is the 187th tallest building in the world.
The inhabitants of Warsaw still commonly use nicknames to refer to the palace, notably Pekin (Beijing in Polish, because of its abbreviated name PKiN (Pałac Kultury i Nauki), Pajac (“clown”, a word that sounds close to Pałac), Stalin’s syringe or even the Russian Wedding Cake. The terrace on the 30th floor, at 114 metres, is a well-known tourist attraction with a panoramic view of the city. An old joke held that the best views of Warsaw were available from the building: it was the only place in the city from where it could not be seen (a claim originally made by the French writer Guy de Maupassant about the Eiffel Tower).

So ACTA has just been signed by some countries in Tokyo. How does it look like in my country?
Poland’s PM and one of the ministers keep saying there was no way to postpone the signature, which is an absolute lie, because the actual deadline is in 2013, whereas politicians are talking about they “willingness” to discuss ACTA with entire society until planned ratification next year. They are ignoring people’s voice without even hiding it, saying “we’re not going to get blackmailed”.
However, what is really important, this is the first time since 1989 when a serious situation brings masses to the streets and make them say “no” aloud. It’s been like this for last week and it’s going to continue. I’m attending one of these demonstrations tonight in my city. This should have happened much, much earlier, and not because of internet censorship. Yet I’m still glad something finally woke most of people up…
Martial Law in Poland: 30th anniversary (13.12.1981)
There’s an excellent piece on fracking in November’s Scientific American. I just hope Polish lawmakers will learn from others’ mistakes and do the right thing, imposing appropriately strict regulations on the companies drilling for shale gas here—especially that just today a new, big mine was found. Because so far all they talk about are concessions and hopes of energetic independence from Russia (which is important, but isn’t the health and safety of our citizens at least just as crucial?).
The riots in the capital. On Independence Day. Poland, I’m ashamed for you.
A flight from Newark, New Jersey, makes an emergency landing at Warsaw, Poland’s Frederic Chopin International Airport.
So, uni starts tomorrow.
